Take pictures of the damage before calling your insurance company to file a claim. Keep receipts of any purchases or repairs you make to replace your items. Document your losses. If you feel your claim was not handled properly, you can hire a public adjuster to assess the damage and provide an estimate of repair costs to your insurance agent.

How much time must I wait to file a claim?

Most policies cover replacement costs or cash value for items damaged in an insured peril. A damage adjuster will inspect the item to determine how much to pay.

Standard insurance policies cover water damage caused by an accident, not neglect. Inspect your house regularly and fix any issues that arise.

Most insurance policies will cover the cost of repairing and replacing your possessions as long as you act quickly. Keep receipts for any repairs and send them to the insurer. Your insurer may raise rates or refuse to renew your policy if you make too many non-weather related claims in a short period of time.
